Jesuit priest Fr Richard D’Souza, a galactic archaeologist at the Vatican Observatory, studies galactic cannibalism. His 2018 research in Nature Astronomy revealed the Andromeda galaxy’s major merger occurred two billion years ago. D’Souza, who balances cosmic research with faith, now directs the historic observatory, reminding the Church of science and faith’s synergy.
