Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, a Turing Award winner and one of the godfathers of AI, says large language models powering ChatGPT and similar chatbots are fundamentally flawed and will never achieve human-level intelligence. He’s leaving Meta to launch a startup focused on “world models,” which learn through visual data like humans do. LeCun argues current AI systems are less intelligent than cats and warns the industry’s $100+ billion LLM investment is misguided, marking a dramatic split from his employer’s strategy.
