‘Lost’ grasshopper species rediscovered in the wild after 43 years

After being declared extinct in 1996, the Monte Gordo grasshopper has been rediscovered in Cape Verde’s highlands. Dutch biologists spotted the insect during a field trip, finding multiple specimens within Monte Gordo Natural Park. This ‘living fossil,’ uniquely adapted to the harsh environment, now faces a ‘Vulnerable’ status due to its tiny territory and habitat risks.
