Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, was killed during a government operation in Jalisco, triggering nationwide cartel violence. Founder of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, he built one of Mexico’s fastest-growing and most aggressive criminal organisations. His death is a major blow to the group but raises fears of fragmentation, succession struggles and escalating “narcoterrorism” as rivals and factions vie for control.
